Alice Chum

Described by Jerome Lowenthal as ‘an outstanding pianist with extraordinary touching and imagination’, Hong Kong pianist Alice Manshan is the major prize-winner of the National Vocational College Skills Competition in China and the Colorado International Piano Academy Competition. She won second place in the 6th ASEAN International Piano Concerto Competition, third place in the 4th Kawai Asia Piano Competition, and fourth place in the 7th Croatian EPTA International Youth Piano Competition. She was also a prize winner of the International Competition for Young Pianists in memory of Vladimir Horowitz in Ukraine when she was 13.

She worked with Ukrainian National Meritorious Radio Symphony Orchestra in Kiev and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, she was invited to perform in the Hong Kong Arts Festival. She also has rich experience in chamber music playing and has given concerts in the United Kingdom, United State, Belgium, Croatia, Russia, Ukraine and China. Recently, she has performed Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 and Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.2 in Hong Kong and London, and held her solo recital in Hong Kong City Hall. She has been participating in Salzburg Mozarteum International Summer Academy, Beijing International Music Festival, Colorado International Piano Summer Academy. She had participated in masterclasses given by Diane Anderson, Jerome Lowenthal, Louis Lortie, Lee Kum-Sing, Jean-Claude Pennetier, Aquiles Dells Vigne, Maxim Mogilevsky, Joanna MacGregor, Vanessa Latarche, Graham Scott.

Manshan studied with Professor Eleanor Wong for her Bachelor degree under a full scholarship by The Cecil Leong Scholarship at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. While in the academy, she won numerous scholarships, including Eleanor Wong Scholarship, Piano Staff Prize, Parsons Music Foundation Scholarship, and the 2018-2020 Pearl River Kayserburg Scholarship. She furthered her study with Professor Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music in London under scholarship by Jennifer Sharp Award and graduated with Master of Arts and Professional Diploma.

Manshan was appointed as the first Kayserburg Asia Pacific Regional Young Artist in 2023. She has also been invited as an artist-in-residence of the Asian Art Association Singapore(Music) in 2023. In 2024, she was appointed as an International Cultural role model to tribute to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and selected for Chinese Culture On World Stamps, by the United Nations World Intangible Cultural Heritage Foundation and China International Cultural Arts Exchange and Development Center.

As an educator, Manshan is committed to promoting the development of music in Hong Kong. Her students have achieved excellent results in competitions. Recently, she was invited to become a jury member for the Asian Finals of the Brahms International Music Competition and the 2024 Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia International Competition. In recognition of her teaching excellence, she has been awarded the Excellent Teacher Award at the Hong Kong Promotion of Performing Arts Festival. Furthermore, she has been signed as an artist of the China Global Music Education Association, and holds lectures invited by Mr. Liu Shikun.
